Scholarships Awarded to Hospitality Industrys Up and Coming

[Columbia, MD] – The Maryland Hospitality Education Foundation (MHEF) announced the awarding of over $50,000 in scholarship money to Maryland students over the past year thanks to the foundation and its affiliate organizations. Scholarships were awarded to high school graduates and current post secondary students who are pursuing culinary arts and/or hospitality management degrees. This amount represents a 56% increase in scholarship money MHEF and its partners awarded last year.

Restaurant Association of Maryland Calls on Maryland Restaurants to Apply for the 10th Annual Restaurant Neighbor Award

[Columbia, MD] – The National Restaurant Association (NRA) in coordination with the Restaurant Association of Maryland (RAM) today called on RAM members to apply for the Restaurant Neighbor Award, an annual award given to restaurants demonstrating outstanding community service. The National Restaurant Association developed the Restaurant Neighbor Award to highlight the community service achievements of the industry. The deadline to apply for the Award, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, is June 20, 2008, and applicants may apply online at the National Restaurant Association’s website, www.restaurant.org/community.

On January 21st, 2008, the Taste of Maryland Legislative Reception upheld its reputation as the most celebrated legislative reception of the season dazzling the palates of lawmakers, the press and the who’s who of the restaurant and tourism industry. The evening, held at the Loews Annapolis Hotel, was organized by the Restaurant Association of Maryland (RAM) in coordination with the Maryland Association of Destination Marketing Organizations (MADMO), the Maryland Tourism Council (MTC) and the Maryland Hotel and Lodging Association (MHLA).

Restaurant Association of Maryland Names Interim President: Director of Maryland Hospitality Education Foundation Selected

(Columbia, MD) On Friday, November 16th, the Restaurant Association of Maryland named Marshall Weston Jr. interim President by action of the executive committee of the Association’s Board of Directors. Weston has been the Executive Vice President of the Maryland Hospitality Education Foundation (MHEF), a nonprofit organization that works with the Restaurant Association of Maryland, since 2002. Leading the MHEF staff, he has been instrumental in carrying out the MHEF mission of training the hospitality industry in food safety, responsible alcohol service, and management skills. As current Executive Vice President of the Maryland Hospitality and Education Foundation, Weston has worked closely with the staff of the Restaurant Association of Maryland.

Money Doesn't Grow on Trees

Maryland’s most impressive rising culinary students from 15 high schools around the state will compete for $590,500 in college and continuing education scholarships and state-wide bragging rights for the year. Participating teams are all a part of the ProStart School-to-Career program used by over 50 schools in the state. MHEF in partnership with the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation (NRAEF) established the program to enable students who are looking to enter the hospitality job market directly or making plans for college.

Executives Ask Panel for Federal Tax Breaks
